When you think bucket list places to visit in Colorado, what comes to your mind? For me I think Denver, Aspen, Glenwood Springs, Pagosa Springs, and Telluride. If I am being for real though I just named like 15 other places in Colorado. It is just impossible to narrow them down! Haha! Anyway, the point is on almost everybody’s lists will be either Aspen or Glenwood Springs. This mountainous valley is so beautiful that it doesn’t even seem real. I mean people from all over the world come here and millionaires….scratch that billionaires live here!
I have a whole other article just about visiting Glenwood and Aspen, but if you are in the area there is one tiny little town that you have to add to your list that is right by those magnificent tourist stops; Silt, Colorado! This tiny little town is so small you won’t even realize you are in it before you leave it. Regardless you are going to want to make sure you stop, because Silt has 2 Colorado gems that you do not want to miss out on!
Where The Heck Is Silt?
The majority of the people who have been to Silt didn’t even realize it was there it was so small. It is just one of those towns along I-70 that you just look out the window and think wow this is so beautiful! This tiny town is located between Glenwood Springs and Rifle right off of I-70. It is just out to the canyon and valley of mountains that makes up the Glenwood/Aspen valley, but not quite as desert like as the Rifle area.
Silt is built alongside the river and is lush green from being so close to the mountains. Surrounding are the gorgeous mountains of Glenwood canyon and a breathtaking view of the Roan Plateau that surrounds Rifle.
Where Should I Stay In Silt?
You will recognize that you are in Silt when you look over to your left westbound on I-70 and see the cutest little KOA. I have never stayed there because I lived so close, but I have always wanted to stay at one of their little bunkhouses. So if you are visiting to stay at Silt, this is where I would recommend you stay. They have the cutest little cabins along the riverside with a great view of the Roan Plateau in Rifle.
Or you could stay at the bed and breakfast at Sopris Alpaca Farm. They have an adorable little cabin tucked into their fields of Alpacas! Keep reading for more information about this farm!

Sopris Alpaca Farm
I lived over in Glenwood Springs for about a year and this is one place that we came back to over and over again! I can not even describe how much we enjoyed visiting! There are so many Alpacas! When you arrive you start in the boutique store to get your feed ($3 a bag of feed) and admission is FREE!
I walked into that store and my mind went berserk! I wanted everything! Everything was either made from Alpaca wool or Alpaca related in some way! The Alpaca blankets were so beautiful and my daughter begged me to get her the stuffed animals all made from Alpaca wool! I left with a cute wood carved Alpaca Christmas ornament cause I am a sucker for ornaments!
After you get the feed you can feed the Alpacas! They get so excited to see you that they come crowding along the fence line! You feed the males, females, and the weaned babies! They are so adorable! My kids LOVED this and I was right there with them, I loved it too!
The owners are super friendly and will tell you the names of the Alpacas and anything you want to know about them! I am pretty sure I could spend all day patting the fluffy, puffy heads of those Alpacas! You have to stop, it is so worth it!
Admission: FREE, $3 a bag of feed if you want to feed the Alpacas
Hours: everyday 10am-4pm
Location: 35795 US-6, Silt, CO 81652
Harvey Gap State Park
Colorado has almost everything, but unfortunately it isn’t surrounded by the ocean. BUT….Colorado still has beaches! Harvey Gap State Park is the Colorado version of a beach vacation! This gorgeous lake is located on the north side of Silt in between a couple of mountains. When I first pulled up to this lake my jaw literally dropped because of the color of the water! It was almost a turquoise blue! It was bright and so beautiful!! I mean look at the pictures above! So blue!
The water was so clear that you could see the fish even in the deeper sections of the lake. It was so clear, so beautiful, and SO cold! Just warning you now, that there is mountain run off water and it feels like swimming in snow. It is so so cold! You may want to wear a wet suit type swimsuit when swimming here.
Also water shoes are a necessity! Colorado beaches don’t have sand, they have rock. Slippery, sharp rocks all over the beach area and the water. Water shoes are essential when swimming anywhere in Colorado lakes, streams, rivers, or hot springs! Just saving your feet a ton of pain! Your welcome!
Harvey Gap State Park isn’t a huge lake and not one for boating with an engine boat, but perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, or canoeing. I don’t know about you, but I am obsessed with these inflatable kayaks! Instead of hauling around a giant kayak it is so nice to just bring a bag and then inflate it when I need it. They are surprisingly super durable too! I am a huge fan!
You can hike around half of the lake, but the other half is private property. AllTrails does say that there is a waterfall here, but it is literally just water falling from a man made pipe, so if you count that as a waterfall than sure there is a waterfall here.
Admission: $9 a vehicle or $4 a person (bring cash or check, it is a self-pay station)
Hours: everyday 6am-10pm
Amenities: vaulted toilets, picnic tables
Location: 2797 Co Rd 237, Silt, CO 81652
