North Clear Creek Waterfall in Creede, Colorado

Colorado is a stunning state with a little bit of everything—museums, history, incredible food, deserts, mountains, and zoos. When people think of visiting, they usually head to Denver, Aspen, or Colorado Springs. They flock to famous spots like Rocky Mountain National Park, Mesa Verde, or the Colorado National Monument. While those sights are breathtaking, they also come with crowds and traffic.

But tucked away, far from the hustle and bustle, is a place just as breathtaking—and far less traveled: Creede, Colorado. It’s a true hidden gem with charm, history, waterfalls, and a one-of-a-kind festival you’ll never forget.

When to Visit Creede

Sitting at 8,799 feet in elevation, Creede is even higher than Aspen! That means chilly winters and twisty mountain roads that aren’t ideal in snow. Spring brings mud and bare trees. But summer and fall? That’s when the magic happens.

Fall: Crisp air and golden aspen trees line the western slopes. Perfect for a scenic mountain escape.

Summer: Warm, sunny days with everything in full bloom. This is also Donkey Dash season—a one-of-a-kind mountain race featuring—you guessed it—donkeys!

Getting There

Creede is remote, and that’s part of the adventure. The drive is half the fun—no matter which way you come in.

From Pagosa Springs: Take in Treasure Falls, twist through mountain passes, and enjoy a crowd-free drive along creeks and forested roads.

From Lake City: Aspen groves, scenic pullouts, and wide-open mountain views await. Trust me, you’ll want to stop every 10 miles to take pictures.

A hidden gem just off a dirt road. Park at the reservoir, cross the street, and hike a short, easy 0.4-mile trail past a creek and into the woods. The waterfall is tucked away in the trees—a peaceful and rewarding stop.

Drive through the campground (no fee unless staying) and park in a small lot. From there, it’s a 0.3-mile zigzag trail down to the falls. The hike is short but rocky—bring hiking shoes and a baby carrier if needed. At the base are giant boulders to climb, a shallow creek to splash in, and mist from the falls. Pure mountain magic.

4. Coffee on the Fly

Back in town? Cool off with ice cream from this tiny but charming coffee shop. With 8–10 rotating flavors, it’s the perfect treat while you wait for the Donkey Dash.

Tip: Bring camp chairs and grab a grassy spot near the Creede Historical Museum to relax and people-watch.

5. The Donkey Dash

Starts in front of the Creede Mining Historical Museum. This 17-mile mountain race with pack donkeys is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. It honors Creede’s mining history and is the highlight of summer. While most people run races just on their own, this is a race you run with your donkey! Hundreds of donkeys and runners pace themselves through the twisty scenic mountains. While I am not willing to run 17 miles with a donkey, it sure is a fun thing to watch!

Tips for a great experience:

  • Arrive 1 hour early to see racers prepping their donkeys.
  • Stand along the curb near Coffee on the Fly about 20 minutes before the race.
  • Avoid the crowd at the starting line—you’ll get a better view a bit down the road.
  • Bring chairs, snacks, and a camera—you’ll want to capture this!

Ready to eat? This tiny restaurant has just a few tables but big flavor. Try the Buffalo Chicken Wrap or Buffalo Chicken Burger—spicy and delicious! Skip the beef burgers. They’re greasy and overpowering. Stick with the chicken—it’s the local favorite!

7. Seaborn Collins Memorial Art Park

Next door to Miner’s Restaurant, grab your food to-go and eat here instead. This peaceful art park features sculptures, benches, flowers, and a giant mural of a moose. It’s the perfect place to unwind and reflect on your day. Favorite sculpture: A mama bear snuggling her cubs!
