What to expect when visiting the Land of Oz Museum?
The tour through the Land of Oz Museum starts walking along the yellow brick road to the different statues and art of the Wizard of Oz characters. Check out the names in the on the bricks and see if you can find your favorite characters.
The first stop along the tour is a walk through in the history of Dorothy. Walk through a house that resembles what Dororthy would have lived in during her time period. This house is full of artifacts from toys, pictures, clothes, kitchen tools, and laundry tools. Walk through history, but look out Dorothy’s window to see what is next on the tour….a tornado!
After touring Dorothy’s house walk into the a building called the land of Oz museum. You will enter into a dark room that resembles Dorothy’s home, but in this room you will experience a tornado! Okay, it just gets really dark. The curtains blow, lights flash, and it sounds like rain and thunder! It was enough to give my kiddos a little scare though!
After the tornado walk through the door into the world of Oz, munchkin land! When you walk in the first thing you will see is Glenda the Good Witch surrounded by the yellow brick road, flowers and little people. There are several screens around with munchkins walking across the screen.
The best part though was the house sitting on top of the wicked witch! My kids were SO excited to see this room, but seeing the feet with the slippers was the cherry on top!
As you walk past the munchkin land, following the yellow brick road, you meet come to a division in the road. Don’t worry though cause the scarecrow will point the way to where you should go. As you follow his direction, watch out for the trees. They threw apples at Dorothy, why not you? Haha!
Past the trees, rusted for years is the tin man. The tour guide will give him some oil, but watch your back cause the wicked witch is waiting for you on the roof above. (Besides the scarecrow, she is the only one that moves during the tour.)
After seeing the witch you will then walk by her haunted castle, surrounded by her flying monkeys. Keep an eye out for the witch in the corner with a light up broom. Thankfully we know that Dorothy melts the wicked witch, so peek through the window to see her being awarded the broom.
Up next in the land of Oz museum is heading to the Emerald City, once you get past the guard at the door you will be welcomed by the horse that changes colors! The horse has a light shining on it that switches colors, it is so cute!
There is a display set up of Dorothy, Lion, Scarecrow, and Tinman getting cleaned up before you walk through the glowing tunnel to where the great Wizard of Oz is. There is a projector set up of the wizard’s head just like in the movie.
After you discover the truth about the wizard, there is a hot air balloon that took the wizard home, but forgot Dorothy! Thankfully if you turn around behind you will be a bubble that fades into Glenda the good witch. Of course we know the rest of the story from there.
The end of the tour is a room of Wizard of Oz memorabilia. Plates, ornaments, pictures, dolls, shoes, and all sorts of objects from the movie.
If you have kids though the tour isn’t quite over. Walk out of the Land of Oz building to the Wizard of Oz playground! Honestly this is one of the kids favorite part of the tour, but it was the only part that wasn’t narrated. There is a slide, swings, toddler swings, and holes for faces to become oz characters. This is the official end of the Wizard of Oz experience.
What we liked about the tour?
The experience of visiting the Land of Oz museum is so much fun! If you are a fan of the movie than the whole thing will just be cute! Experiencing the tornado, finding the different characters, and especially walking through the munchkin land. It is just cute. I am not saying it is fancy and it is somewhat cheaply done, but it is unique and so this makes it exciting.
What we didn’t like about the tour?
The narrative of the tour guide. The tour is fun and the rooms are exciting, but if you were to ask my kids at the end if they enjoyed it they would probably say no. They complained during the whole tour not about what they were seeing, but that the tour narrative was so long and not exciting at all.
Don’t get me wrong our tour guide was a sweet older gentlemen, but his voice was soft and hard to hear for a majority of it. He pretty much reenacted the whole movie throughout the tour with his words. He quoted the movie a bit, but mostly retold the story. It was just not really thrilling to listen to an the monologue took a very long time.
If you were to ask my kids they would tell you that the narrative was boring and I kind of agree. The place was exciting, but because of the tour we will probably never go back.
Do you have to take the tour?
In order to go through Dorothy’s house and the Land of Oz, you do have to have a tour guide take you through. If you are just wandering the grounds and playing at the playground than you can do that on your own.
Is it for kids and toddlers?
This is kind of a hard question to answer. My kids thought the whole experience of the different rooms and finding characters simply magical. I think the look on their faces was the most magical part of it all.
However, they complained the whole time about how bored they were. If we could have just walked through they would have loved it, but having to stand and listen to the tour guide retell the narrative in each room for about 10 minutes each makes it all lose its thrill.
My toddlers loved the rooms, but were bored the whole time. You know your kids, so if they get bored easy this may not be the best place for them.
