What To Do
Durango Fish Hatchery– A perfect family reunion activity that everyone will enjoy in Durango is feeding the trout at the local fish hatchery! While this is incredible enough to see, it becomes an even more enjoyable activity when you purchase fish food for a mere 25 cents to watch the fish jump up in a feeding frenzy!
Vallecito Creek Trail– Even if you do not want to drive all the way to Durango for all the fun, Bayfield has enough fun just around the corner. On the north end of the Vallecito Lake is a campground that has a couple breathtaking trails. These trails take you up are around giant boulders, magnificent pine trees, and a roaring creek. It is a pretty easy rocky trail that leads to an amazing view and a great place to soak your feet in the creek!
Powerhouse Science Museum- While I have mostly focused on the nature side of family gatherings, there are so many more activities to do that the whole family can enjoy together! One of those is embracing the inner tourist and visiting local museums. Durango has a smaller science museum built inside and old plant located next to the roaring river. This museum has play areas for kids, animals to pet, and multiple science projects that even adults will enjoy.
Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Park
National Parks stand as treasures of our planet, preserving some of its most extraordinary wonders for our delight and protection. Among these remarkable destinations, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park emerge as prime choices. These adjacent parks boast vast expanses and a diverse range of experiences, from traversing trails amidst towering Sequoias, to crossing bridges over tumultuous rapids, and scaling massive boulders.
Imagining a family gathering within these parks paints a vivid picture: uncles hoisting nieces on their shoulders while hiking, toddlers gleefully gathering pinecones, and families linking hands to measure the girth of a colossal Sequoia. Picture evenings spent swapping tales by the fire, fathers playfully competing with their children in rock-skipping contests, and grandparents chuckling at the wonder in their grandchildren’s eyes as they spot a bear. While Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks offer ample camping and lodging options within the parks, there’s another gem worth considering: the KOA in Visalia, California, just an hour southwest of the parks.
