Fort Davis is a small town tucked away in the mountains of West Texas. The town has been built around the old military fort that still stands as a National Historic Site. Though the military fort is super old, there is something on this land that is much older and that is the wildlife of the land. Roadrunners, coyotes, scorpions, javelinas, and tons of rattlesnakes! So to truly appreciate the history of the area, visit the Rattlers and Reptiles rattlesnake museum!
What is it Rattlers and Reptiles?
Rattlers and Reptiles is a small building that is filled with all types of rattlesnakes from all over the USA. It is claimed to be the world’s largest live rattlesnake exhibit. Now I have definitely been to zoos that have had more snakes, but I have never seen such a variety of rattlesnakes before. There were rattlesnakes of all colors; red, white, brown, black, yellow, and grey. The rattlesnakes were from all over the USA and in all shapes. There are also scorpions, tarantulas, and other creepy bugs.

What We Loved About It?
- The exhibits make it easy to see the snakes: The exhibits are not overly crowded with branches and caves and so it is really easy to find the snakes and you get a great view of them.
- I have NEVER seen snakes so active: What made this museum so fun was that the snakes were super active! Almost every snake was moving, some were rattling their tails and one even struck at the glass. Which I was super glad was between him and my face! It was amazing to see this reptiles in action!
- There were more than snakes: There are all kinds of creepy crawlers, not just snakes to admire.
What We Didn’t Like About It?
- Price of Admission: $7 per person!! That is super overpriced for such a small museum
- It is super small: It is a 2 room building. One room is where all the snakes are and the other room is an information room about rattlesnakes.
- Cash only: Bring cash, because they don’t accept cards
- Hours posted doesn’t mean it is always open: We arrived around 12pm and so the owner was out to lunch which is understandable. On the door it was posted that he would be back at 12:30, we waited and nobody came. We left and got ice cream, came back an hour later and he still wasn’t there. We went to the fort and a hike and decided to try one more time and luckily he was there. So don’t always trust that it is open during the hours posted, which is 10am-5pm.
