When driving through the Texas Panhandle, many travelers rush to reach Lubbock or Amarillo, often overlooking the charm of smaller towns along the way. But nestled between these two bustling cities lies the hidden gem of the Texas Panhandle: Plainview, Texas.
As you approach Plainview, you’ll quickly notice a unique and vibrant feature that sets this town apart—elaborately painted cattle scattered throughout the city. These iconic, colorful cows are more than just eye-catching; they’re a celebration of Plainview’s character and creativity. While some of these artistic bovines have moved on, enough remain to make hunting them down a must-do activity when visiting this quaint and charming town.
The History Of These Painted Cows
For about 18 months I lived in Seattle, Washington; teaching people about God. While there one of my assignments was to help teach the Chinese students of University of Washington to speak English. Every class I would stand up and introduce myself; telling them my name and where I was from.
Every single time I shared that I was from Texas, the young men and women of my class would ask me if I was a cowgirl or if I rode horses. If you don’t think cowboys when you hear Texas than obviously you never heard of this giant state!
Plainview, Texas fits that basic Texas stereotype with its rich history in cattle and ranching. To honor its heritage, the city of Plainview decorated its town with about 50 painted cows spread between major business in parks. Sadly, due to vandalism and Texas’s harsh weather, only about 30 have survived. These tall, beautiful bovines are a must see attraction in this small Texas town.
