West Texas pumpkin patch photo op

Something I have learned while living in West Texas, there are really only 2 seasons in a year. There is winter for about 2 months, and then there is summer the other 10 months of the year. One day its cold, and the next day it is in the 100s! Welcome to West Texas weather!

So sadly for those of us who adore fall it is practically nonexistent. There are no trees so of course no leaves changing color. The temperature averages in the 80s, so goodbye sweaters and cute cardigans. Wear brown or fall colors and you will just blend into the environment. There’s not a lot to remind you that it is fall, except for PUMPKIN PATCHES!!

There are at least 34 pumpkin patches west of Dallas and about 3 that are right on the border of West Texas/East New Mexico. SO if you are one of those people that are desperate to surround yourself with the fun and excitement will fall, put on your fall/Halloween clothes, grab your camera, and head to a West Texas pumpkin patch near you!

Pumpkin Patches: Ranked From Least Favorite to the Best

St Lukes Methodist Church Pumpkin Patch

(Midland, Texas)

We love visiting west texas pumpkin patches
Visiting pumpkin patches in West Texas are a great way to enjoy fall as a family

You had me at FREE! Being a mom has given me a greater love for the word free! So when I heard there was a free pumpkin patch in town, I was there! This tiny little pumpkin patch is one more for the pumpkin than the activities. There really are only 2 things to do here, buy a pumpkin and take a picture. This cute little yard in Midland, Texas is filled with pumpkins and decorated with adorable photo ops. Not a thrilling patch, but great for the Instagram mama looking for the perfect shot of her toddler with a pumpkin!

Activities:

  • Photo Ops
  • Buy Pumpkins

What we loved:

Pumpkin patches mean happy kids
There are adorable photo ops at the St Luke Methodist Church Pumpkin Patch in Midland, Texas
  • Its FREE! A free way to entertain your kids and get adorable pictures.
  • There are great photo ops. There are stations all over purely for taking pictures.
  • It is right in town, it is kinda nice not have to drive out into the middle of no where just for a pumpkin patch.

What we didn’t like:

This pumpkin patch was mostly just pumpkins and photo ops
Take your kids to this West Texas Pumpkin Patch for adorable photo ops
  • There are no activities, this is literally buy a pumpkin, take a picture, and you are done.
  • It gets crowded! You wouldn’t think such a small pumpkin patch would be such a hit, but every time we have gone we have had to wait our turn constantly to get pictures. I mean it is super small so it is pretty easy to fill up.
  • The pumpkins are expensive!

Big Stars Farm

(Ovalo, Texas)

Visit the Big Stars Farm
Feeding the cows was the best part of the Big Stars Farm
Big Stars Farm is best for toddlers

If you are looking for the most West Texas experience of them all then this is the pumpkin patch to visit. You are literally in the middle of no where, somewhere below Abilene. The yard is dirt covered in mesquite trees and this is all there is for miles around. This farm is very small, but when has that ever stopped anyone from having fun! It has the basics of animals and pumpkins, what else do you need.

Activities:

  • Pony Rides
  • Hayride
  • Feed Cows
  • Petting Farm
  • Playground
  • Climbing Tire Mound
  • Pumpkin Catapult
  • Bouncy House

What We Loved:

All activities are included with admission to Big Stars Farm
Feed some cows at the Big Star Farms
One of the activities at Big Stars Farm is the tire climbing mound.
  • The hayride takes you to feed cows! This was the best part of the pumpkin patch! We had no idea that you would get to do this, but it was so fun. Every hour on the dot the hayride takes you to a cattle pasture. There you get out and throw pellets to the cows to eat. I say throw cause these cows have huge horns, so you might not want to get too close or you will get walloped with a horn. They were super beautiful cows and it was so fun to feed them!
  • All the activities are included in the price. So many pumpkin patches that I have gone to make you pay a huge admission and then you still have to pay for some of the activities. It makes going to a pumpkin patch so expensive. With this one though all of your activities are paid for with admission.
  • The staff was super friendly. At each activity is a member of the staff to help with the activity and they are all very friendly. It is a nice change of pace from the grumpy seasonal teenagers at most patches.

What We Didn’t Like:

There was only 1 photo op at the Big Stars Farm
The petting zoo at Big Stars Farm only has ponies and goats.
  • It was way over priced! When I pulled up to the pumpkin patch I almost turned around and left because I knew that this pumpkin patch was $10 a person. That isn’t a ton for a pumpkin patch, but this one was pretty sad looking. I pretty much paid for my kids to play at a playground. The activities are small and not worth the amount you pay to get in.
  • There wasn’t much to it. Going along with it being overpriced, there is not much to this patch. The activities are small and only take about 5 minutes each. There wasn’t enough to do to make it worth the trip.
  • There weren’t very many pumpkins. This was a big downside to the whole farm. There were probably 3 pallets of pumpkins and a wagon, that was about it.
  • There were only goats and ponies to pet in the petting zoo. The petting zoo was more of a goat pen. There were probably 5 goats and 4 ponies. That was the extent of the animals to pet.
  • Only 1 photo op. This was a huge shocker to me! People come to pumpkin patches for the pictures just as much as the fun and there was only one photo op on the farm!
  • Not everything was open. My kids were beyond excited about the fact that they would get to ride a pony, but the pony wasn’t even out. Also the bouncy house was deflated. This really narrowed down the fun for us at the pumpkin patch.

TLC Pumpkin Patch

(Ballinger, Texas)

There was a huge variety of pumpkins at TLC Pumpkin Patch
There are a lot of animals at the TLC Pumpkin Patch

This pumpkin patch is pretty much an antique junkyard; now saying that is exactly what gives this pumpkin patch its charm. This adorable little pumpkin patch is not your typical pumpkin patch. The normal activities of a jumping pillow, zip line, and pumpkin catapults are replaced with gunfight reenactments, an arcade, and a baboon. Yes you read that right, there is a baboon on site!

It is filled with antiques of all sorts built around an old west town. Like I said an antique junkyard. There are a wonderful selection of pumpkins for actually a pretty decent price. This isn’t a pumpkin patch per say; more of a cute, fall themed place to buy pumpkins!

Activities:

  • Gunfight shows
  • Farm Animals
  • Karaoke
  • Baboon Viewing
  • Arcade Games
  • Photo Ops
  • Pumpkin Sales
  • Bouncy Houses
TLC Pumpkin Patch was a fun West Texas Pumpkin Patch

What we loved:

There is a baboon at the TLC Pumpkin Patch
There are many photo ops at the pumpkin patches in West Texas
  • It is cheap! Only $5 ages 5+! That is a heck of a deal for a pumpkin patch.
  • We loved watching the animals. The chickens are running loose and so are a couple of sweet dogs. There are turkeys, pheasants, mini cows, an assortment of goats, and pigs. Also this is officially the first pumpkin patch I have been to that has a baboon!
  • There was a huge variety of pumpkins! Also each pumpkin is already marked with the price so you aren’t surprised at the checkout with the price.
  • The arcade machines were relatively cheap. We have been to so many arcades where the price is like $2 a game or requires 10 tokens per game. Most of the machines only required max 50 cents or 1 token. We got to play a lot of games with our bag of tokens.
  • It is open daily! Most pumpkin patches are only open on weekends, but this one is open every day and not just in the evening time! Perfect for mama’s like me that like to beat the crowd!

What we didn’t like:

This quirky pumpkin patch was filled with antiques
The dogs at TLC Pumpkin Patch were so friendly
  • It is kind of junky, I mean this is part of the charm of this place, but it is almost too junky.
  • A lot of the arcade machines weren’t working and the other half were quarters only. I suggest bringing quarters or cash to exchange for quarters! You can buy tokens with a card (we spent $10 for 45 tokens) but the games are very limited as to what you can play. The arcade is very run down with many out of order games or they are simply not working properly.
  • It is very small.

$5 ages 5+

Assiter Punkin Ranch and Pumpkin Patch

(Floydada, Texas)

If you are looking to take the cutest fall pictures with some pumpkins, this is the farm to go to! Really that is what this farm is, a huge photo op! Literally you drive up to a huge red barn that is surrounded with pumpkins stacked on haybales, lining the road, surrounding covered wagons, and decorating the fences. There are pumpkins EVERYWHERE! No wonder Floydada is considered the pumpkin capital of the USA!

Activities:

  • Photo Ops
  • Pumpkin Carriage Ride
  • Petting Zoo
  • Dog Demonstrations

What we loved:

  • Cutest Photo Ops- There are so many cute set ups at this pumpkin patch. There is a monster train, an orange punch-bug, wagons, old farm tools, and Charlie Brown’s great pumpkin! All of these set ups are covered in pumpkins and colorful squash. Definitely a farm for an Instagram lover!
  • Free- You had me at free. I love not spending money and still getting to do fun things!

What we didn’t like:

  • There weren’t a lot of activities- This pumpkin patch was simply cute that is really all there was to it. There are really only a handful of things to actually do besides take pictures and buy a pumpkin. It is magical to look at, but really not a lot to physically do.

Balzano Family Vineyard and Pumpkin Patch

(Carlsbad, New Mexico)

Cute photo op at the Balzano Family Vineyard in New Mexico
Cute photo op at the Balzano Pumpkin Patch in Carlsbad, New Mexico

Carlsbad, New Mexico may not be a West Texas pumpkin patch, but it is close enough. Surrounded by pecan trees in Carlsbad, New Mexico is a vineyard/pumpkin patch! When we first showed up I thought it would be super small, but it is a pumpkin patch filled with SO many activities! There was so much to do, I am pretty sure we could have spent the entire day here! The activities that we could do, but our experience was tainted by the rude staff and old equipment. BUT the petting farm area is super fun and you get to have so much interaction with the animals. I mean baby goat cuddling….do I even need to say more?

Activities:

  • Bingo
  • Fishing
  • Bouncy Houses
  • Blow-up Corn Maze
  • Food
  • Rubber Duck Race
  • Pig Races
  • Cattle Barrel Train
  • Hayrides
Balzano Vineyard is a very toddler friendly pumpkin patch
  • Mine Panning
  • Photo Ops
  • Playground
  • Petting Zoo
  • Gerbil Barrel Runs
  • Obstacle Course
  • Giant Bounce Pumpkin
  • Pumpkin Patch
  • Pumpkin Sling Shot

What we loved:

Pet so many animals at the Barzano Vineyard in Carlsbad, New Mexico
There are animals all over at the Barzano Vineyard in Carlsbad, New Mexico
  • The Animal Interactions! The petting barn is what makes this place! They have everything from alpacas to chickens, bunnies, goats, horses, ducks, and ponies. I know that doesn’t sound that cool, except you they have a baby goat cuddling pen! They have a pen to snuggle with a bunny! The chickens and ducks are free range and running all around right next to you! Do you know how fun it is to pet a duck!? So fun! This was to best part of the whole Pumpkin Patch.
  • The Variety of Activities: There were so many different things to do! Even if the whole patch is filled with people, you really don’t have to wait in many lines because there is so many different things to do which causes the people to be spread out. Also it makes it fun for everyone. There are games and activities for adults, some for teenagers, some for young kids, and for toddlers. It is one you won’t be bored at, and could take your entire day with all the fun they have.

What we didn’t like:

The bouncy houses at the Barzano Vineyard were old and tattered.
At the Barzano Vineyard there were so many different farm animals
  • The bouncy houses were all old and ripped. There were 4 bouncy houses/blowup activity centers at the pumpkin patch. Exciting right? Except for the fact that all of them look like they are 5-10 years old. They are all sun faded, dirty, torn, patched, re-patched, and ripped. Now they still do their job of holding in air for kids to bounce, but they look awful and your kid can very easily fall out. They just really need to update their bouncy houses.
  • The workers are not friendly. Now I know pumpkin patches hire your teenagers as their seasonal workers, but when we went the workers were rude, unfriendly, and nonexistent. You would find groups of workers hanging out at the picnic tables, but they were never at any of the stations, so very few things were open for you to do. Then if you did do the activity without a worker there you would get in trouble. Really bad service.
  • The price! $20 for 3 years and up! That is a heck of a lot of money for a pumpkin patch!

Admission:

$20 ages 3+, under are FREE

Pecan Creek Farm and Ranch

(San Angelo, Texas)

West Texas Pumpkin Patch in San Angelo
Pecan Farm in San Angelo was a very toddler friendly West Texas pumpkin patch

Do you have toddlers? Than why are you not at this farm? This is the most toddler centered pumpkin patch I have ever been to! Everything about this patch screams toddlers! I mean right as you pull in the first thing you see is a GIANT silo slide right in the middle of the farm! It was huge, but beware going down cause you pretty much have to scoot yourself down. It is not slanted enough for adults. There is not one activity that a toddler can not participate in at this farm! Like I said toddler pumpkin heaven!

Activities:

  • Playhouses
  • Obstacle Course
  • Silo Slide
  • Petting Farm
  • Corn Maze
  • Tractor Train
  • Rubber Ducky Races
  • Corn Cannon
  • Giant Gerbil Run
  • Photo Ops
  • Food
  • Swings
  • Bean Bag Toss
  • Hoop Toss

What we loved:

Toddler swinging at the Pecan Farm in San Angelo, Texas
The Pecan Farm in San Angelo has turkeys.
Pecan Farm in San Angelo had a fun obstacle course for toddlers
  • Turkeys- There were are at least 5 turkeys at this farm and you could hear them gobbling all throughout the farm! It was so fun to listen to them and to see them!
  • Very Toddler Friendly- All of the activities were very centered around toddlers. The majority of the farm is a giant playground with playhouses, swings, a giant slide, and an obstacle course. I don’t think there was anything my toddlers couldn’t do.

What we didn’t like:

Toddler racing rubber ducks at the Pecan Farm in San Angelo.
Having fun at a West Texas pumpkin patch
  • Corn Maze was small- I love corn mazes at pumpkin patches, but this one was so small. Being small is nice for the little ones, but not really for adults. It is really a toddler farm. Also the corn was pretty dead, so it wasn’t even a pretty maze.
  • Rubber Duck race pumps didn’t work– My toddler loves racing the rubber ducks using the water pumps, but only one of the pumps actually worked and that one pump leaked water all over my toddler. He was pretty bummed by it.

Heirloom Acres Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch

(Artesia, New Mexico)

Celebrate baby's first pumpkin patch at Heirloom Acres in Artesia, New Mexico
Playing at the Heirloom Acre pumpkin patch

I know I said West Texas pumpkin patch, but this pumpkin patch borders right by Texas in southeast New Mexico. This is a cute little pumpkin patch for a cute little baby! Seriously if you have a baby and this is their first fall season, bring them to Heirloom Acres and get a free little pumpkin for your baby and a certificate of remembrance. How cute is that!? This pumpkin patch is small, but it has all the essentials to it. From cutting your own pumpkins off the vine, to wandering through a corn maze, to feasting on some roasted corn on the cob! It is a perfect farm for little kids!

Activities:

  • Photo Ops
  • Animals to see
  • Zipline
  • Tractor Train Ride
  • Corn Maze (short and long)
  • Pumpkin Patch
  • Pumpkin Chess
  • Rubber Duck Races
  • Food

So many cute photo ops at Heirloom Acres in Artesia, New Mexico

What we loved:

One of the best pumpkin patches of west Texas in near the border in New Mexico
Heirloom Acres has a really cute fairy tale trail corn maze
Lots of fun activities at Heirloom Acres in Artesia, New Mexico
  • Cutest Photo Ops! I love pictures! I love capturing memories and beauty and being able to hold on to them for the rest of my life! This farm had the cutest set ups for photo ops! There were so many to choose from too!
  • Decorated Really Cute! Most pumpkin patches have photo ops and cute pumpkin paintings around, but this entire farm was adorable! There were cute signs and paintings all around. The pumpkins were stacked all over and there were dried corn husks tied on posts and pillars. You were just surrounded by the magic of fall!
  • Not Crowded! If you know me, you know I will go out of my way to find the least busiest time to do things because I absolutely hate crowds. I hate waiting in lines. Not being able to do an activity because there are too many people participating at once, drives me up the wall. That is why I loved this farm! It is a little farm and so it doesn’t attract a ton of people.
  • Baby’s first pumpkin patch gets a FREE pumpkin– If this is your baby’s first Halloween than this is the best farm to take them! Each new baby gets a free pumpkin and a certificate of remembrance. So cute!

What we didn’t like:

Heirloom Farms has a small amount of animals, just goats and ducklings
Corn maze at the Heirloom Acres Farm in Artesia, New Mexico
  • It Is Small- I mentioned that I love that this farm was not crowded, but that is because this is a very small pumpkin patch. There is little room for parking, everything is close together, and this does limit some of the activities you can do.
  • Not Many Animals- When I think of a farm, my first thought is animals. You know goats, cows, and chickens. This farm had 3 goats and a small group of baby ducklings. These were animals that you could just look at and if you were lucky you could pet the goats. It was disappointing to not have really any animals to see or interact with.

Family exploring the corn maze at the At'l Do Farm in Lubbock, Texas

If the corn maze is your favorite part of pumpkin patches than this is the farm for you!! At’l Do Farm is the West Texas pumpkin patch for teenagers! The maze is epic and more for adults than for kids. Although they do have a maze just for the little ones as well. Corn cannons, photo ops, BBQ, and horseback riding; yep definitely a more adult centered fall experience.

Activities:

  • Corn Maze
  • Food
  • Horse Riding ($5)
  • Hayride
  • Photo Ops
  • Cow Train
  • Goat Petting
  • Corn Cannon
  • Pumpkin picking

What we loved:

The entrance to the At'l Do Pumpkin Patch in Lubbock, Texas
Horseback riding at the At'l Do Farm in Lubbock was our favorite part of this West Texas pumpkin patch
  • Epic Corn Maze– This is by far the best corn maze I have ever been to!! It is HUGE! Before you enter the maze, they have a guide to give you instructions. You then grab your trivia card (there are several different types of trivia) and head into the maze. You can try to just wing it if you want, but the trivia questions throughout the maze are there to help direct you through. There are several bridges that raise above the corn so that you can take a peek at where you are at. Also there are several people in the maze to help direct you if you are way too lost! So much fun! There is also a fairy tale short maze for the little kids as well.
  • Huge Selection of pumpkins– There are green pumpkins, pie pumpkins, giant pumpkins, and teeny pumpkins! There are so many different pumpkins to choose from!
  • Such a pretty place– To enter you walk through a decorated silo and into a field with a pond in the middle. Watching over the farm is an enormous windmill! It is such a beautiful farm!

What we didn’t like:

The corn maze at At'l Do Farm is epic!
There were so many pumpkins to choose from at the At'l Do Farm in Lubbock, Texas
  • A lot of people- This is a very busy farm, probably because it is such a fun one. Due to the high amounts of people there are lots of lines to wait in. The longest wait for us was to go on the hayride to the actual pumpkin patch.
  • Not really any animals– There were 3 goats and about 4 horses and that was it animal wise. Sad I love animals at farms.

What we loved:

Tons of photo ops at Fiddlesticks Farm in Midland, Texas
Feed Goats at Fiddlesticks Farm in Midland, Texas
  • Giant Slide is super-fast– When I say giant slide, I mean a giant metal, steep slide! I am complete chicken when it comes to fast downward rides/slides, but for my adrenaline junkie children this slide was epic. The key to the speed is using a potato sack to really keep the movement slick and quick. I think it is terrifying, but it was fun!
  • So much to do– It is an expensive pumpkin patch that is for sure, but that is because there is so much to do! I mean look at that list of activities! It just goes on and on and on! I feel like we could have been there all day and still not do all the activities, which makes this the best West Texas Pumpkin Patch!
  • Amazing fireworks show– On Saturdays at 9pm they have a 10 minute firework show and it is incredible!!

What we didn’t like:

The cow train at Fiddlesticks Farms really hurts
Corn Maze at Fiddlesticks Farm in Midland, Texas
  • The cow tractor train really hurts- just forewarning you now! The cow tractor is super cute and fun, but you are literally straddling a piece of wood in a barrel. So be prepared from your backside to be sore and your back from smacking it against the side of the barrel. Not saying that it isn’t worth it, cause it is a fun ride!
  • It gets really busy- The best time to visit this farm is in September, when fall is just starting to enter peoples thoughts, cause it get SO busy in October. October has the majority of the fun activities, so it is the more fun time to go. Just know that you will stand in lines and have crowded play areas.
  • It’s expensive- I remember when pumpkin patches cost a max of $8 a person. During October, Fiddlesticks Farm costs $22 per adult! That adds up real quick with a family. Plus all of the food and drinks make it even that much more expensive!

  • Tractor Hay Ride
  • Pick your own pumpkins
  • Hay Maze
One of the fun activities at the pumpkin patch
  • Sunflower fields
  • Photo Ops
  • Swings
  • Tractor Train Ride
  • Corn Maze

What We Loved:

Pumpkin patches are a fun thing to do in West Texas
The Elote Corn is the best treat at the Mandujano Brothers Farm
  • It is super cheap- Most pumpkin patches are in the $20 range and that is a lot of money, but this pumpkin patch is only $5 a person!
  • The Elote is AMAZING- Elote is a corn on the cob covered in mayo, cheese, and chili. YOU HAVE TO TRY IT!! This is a Mexican treat and it is so SO good! Make sure you get some while you are here!
  • All the activities are included with the price- Unlike other pumpkin patches, when you pay for entry it pays for all the activities! Now obviously you still have to pay for your pumpkin and food, but other than that you see it and you can do it!
  • It doesn’t get crowded- Because this pumpkin patch is so far out in the middle of no where, it is not heavily trafficked. It is lesser known and so that means less people!

What We Didn’t Like:

Toddlers love a pumpkin patch
Coyanosa, Texas has the best pumpkin patch in west texas
  • It is in the middle of no where- The downside to having a less visited pumpkin patch is that it is less visited for a reason. It is in the middle of no where Coyanosa, Texas. No matter what it is a drive to get here.
  • Despite all of the activities, it is smaller- This is not a huge pumpkin patch like Fiddlesticks Farms or Balzano. It is very small.
  • The tractor hayride is so long- The tractor hayride is so long. They take the tractor out and stop so that people can pick their pumpkins. They do not leave until everyone gets their pumpkin. So figure on being out in the patch for a good 20 minutes at least!
