Get a prize if you finish the Pecos Boot Trail Scavenger hunt

Deep into the desert of West Texas is where rodeos began, where Pecos Bill was dreamed up, and where cowboys rode into the sunset! Welcome to Pecos, Texas!

This old town may not have much to it, but it sure has a great history. So to commemorate the cowboy/western history of this town, the city of Pecos has placed several painted boots in some of the town’s favorite spots. These beautiful boots are hand painted by the western muralist, Stylle Read, and each depicts a piece of what makes Pecos special.

What Is The Pecos Boot Trail and How Do I Start?

To help travelers truly see the beauty of these boots and to give them a bit of a history lesson; the town of Pecos has created and sort of boot scavenger hunt called the Pecos Boot Trail. This scavenger hunt leads you to each of the boots, gives you a background on the location, and story of the mural on the boot. It also gives you the chance to explore every nook and cranny of Pecos, Texas.

To start the Pecos Boot Trail, your first stop will be the Pecos Chamber of Commerce. This building is right by the Museum of the West and the Rodeo Hall of Fame.

At the Pecos Chamber of Commerce, just ask one of the employees for a Pecos Boot Trail Passport. They will hand you a little brown book. This little brown book has the location of each of the boots, a picture of the boot, a description of the boot, and a couple of pages of squares. To do this scavenger hunt, not only do you need to find the boots, you need to walk into the building that is hosting that boot, and get a stamp in your passport book on one of the squares.

The squares are numbered and also labeled with the company that you need a stamp from. The stamps are boot stamps that say Pecos Boot Trail on it. GET ALL THE STAMPS AND GET A PRIZE! Yes, you read that right, if you get all the stamps in your book, just head back to the Pecos Chamber of Commerce building. Show them your passport and get your prize!

Know Before You Go:

  • Z-Tek Construction and West of the Pecos Rodeo Boots have been removed and so you will not be able to get a stamp for these 2 boots.
  • Not all of the boots are in the passport, they have added quite a few more boots. To complete the passport though, you do not have to get a stamp for the boots that are not in the book.
  • Whenever you go into a building to get your stamp, the stamps are normally with the person at the front desk.
  • Take a break from getting stamps around lunch time, a lot of the places close for lunch and so you can not get your stamp until someone comes back.
  • To complete the boot trail you are looking at about 1-2 hours to see all the boots and get all the stamps.

Fifth boot on Pecos Boot Trail

West Texas National Bank Boot

100 E 6th St

I have to say this was the most unpleasant of our stops along the Pecos Boot Trail. The boot itself was pretty, just like all the other boots. It was painted with a map of the locations of the WTNB throughout the West Texas area. The reason it was unpleasant was that the tellers were rude and annoyed with us for asking for a stamp. Necessary evil though to get our prize. Hope you have a better experience!

Parking: park in the parking lot that surrounds the West Texas National Bank

Sixth boot on Pecos Boot Trail

Reeves County Veterans Center Boot

510 S Oak St

Really if you wanted to just stay parked over at the West Texas National Bank you could, cause the next 3 boots are practically right next to each other. Walk behind the West Texas National Bank, cross 6th street and there on the corner of 6th and Oak are 2 boots right across the street from each other. The first one you will come to is a boot decorated to honor our military. My son thought this boot was pretty cool!

Parking: park in the spaces in front of the Veterans center

Eighth boot on Pecos Boot Trail

2T Partners Boot

525 S Oak St

Across the street from the veterans center is the next boot. This boot truly embraces the West Texas look! It is yellow, which is a color you see a lot down in the desert, and decorated with oil donkeys and cactus plants. Just ask the employees at the front desk for a stamp! The inside of this building is filled with taxidermy animals, which my kids found super exciting!

Parking: park in the spaces in front of the 2T Partners building

Ninth boot on Pecos Boot Trail

West Texas Eyecare Boot

611 S. Oak St

Cross 6th street again and walk 1 building over to find yet another beautiful boot! This one is really beautiful. It is another depiction of the beautiful desert and the wildlife that roams that desert! This was the last boot within walking distance though, so head back to your car parked at WTNB and to get to the next boot!

Parking: park in spaces in front of eyecare center

Tenth boot on Pecos Boot Trail

La Fiesta Chili Boot

1313 S Cedar St

Across the street from the historic original rodeo grounds is a couple of Mexican restaurants. The chili decorated boot is in front of a Mexican candy/sweets stop. You can stop in for a delicious treat, but in order to get the stamp for your passport, you will need to walk to the La Fiesta Restaurant right next door to the boot. Just ask the host that is seating people for a stamp and get yourself a cute picture by this Hispanic boot.

Parking: park in the lot on the south side of the La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant

Another boot to see along the Pecos Boot Trail

Wellspring Apartment Boot

2327 S. Arizona Ave

This new boot at the Wellspring Apartment Complex is so pretty. I love the left side of the boot, closest to the leasing office, because it has a waterfall painted on the side. I kinda thought it was funny though since there is no water anywhere around, and especially no waterfall! It is really pretty though. The other side of the boot is more West Texas accurate as it is a mural of oil rigs in the desert. Now that sounds like the West Texas I know.

Parking: either parallel park on S Arizona Ave or park in the spaces of the Apartment leasing office

13th boot on Pecos Boot Trail

TNMP Boot

1126 Stafford Blvd

Next stop along the Texas Boot Trail, is to another new boot that is not yet listed. So no stamp here, but still a good boot that depicts the workers that make this town tick. This power company has hosted a boot showing off the hard work that they do to give this town electricity.

Parking: park in the parking lot in front of the TNMP office

14th boot on Pecos Boot Trail

Million Dollar Diary Queen Boot

1226 S Eddy St

I dare you to try to get the stamp for this boot, with out leaving with an ice cream cone. Of course there has to be a DQ decorated boot in Pecos, I mean this is Texas we are talking about. Texas is home to Dairy Queen and their amazing dipped ice cream cones and blizzards! Thank you Texas for blessing the world with DQ! Just ask the cashier at check out for your last passport stamp.

Parking: park in the DQ parking lot

A beautiful patchwork boot on the Pecos Boot Trail

Reeves County Senior Center Boot

505 S. Park St

The last boot of the Pecos Boot Trail is sitting out in front of the Reeves County Senior Center. This patchwork boot is super cute as it is painted like a giant patchwork quilt. Fitting for the older folks that are actively attending this center. It makes sense that there should be a boot here, because these are the people who have built Pecos into what it is today.

Parking: park in the spaces on the north side of the senior center

The Grand Prize!

The kids got t-shirts for finishing the Pecos Boot Trail

Now that you have your stamp book filled with the stamps of each boot, head back over to the Pecos Chamber of Commerce building. It’s time you got your prize! There were a variety of prizes for adults and for kids. Stickers, key chains, magnet’s, and t-shirts! My kids each picked their own t-shirt to remember Pecos, Texas by. Make sure on your way out, you get a picture of you and your prize in front of legendary Pecos Bill. He is wrestlin’ that tornado with his snake lasso right in front of the Pecos Chamber of Commerce.
