Dallas, Texas is number one on the most visited places in Texas for a reason. There is so much to do in this giant city! This is a town the whole family will absolutely love, and one that expands even beyond the skyscrapers. Surrounding Dallas are tons of fun smaller towns that all connect to make this one giant tourist playground.
One of those really cool towns connected to this amazing town is The Colony, Texas. Located on the north east side of Dallas alongside the Lewisville Lake and Frisco; this smaller section of city life is unique and family friendly. This is the perfect Texas getaway for a wonderful family adventure.
Tips For Your Day In The Colony, Texas:
- Purchase a Get Out Pass! If you purchase the Get Out Pass for the Dallas/Fort Worth area it will get you into almost all of these attractions for free. Use my code WESTXMOM for a discount.
- Visit in the summer. Yes summer is the busiest time of year, but this is also when the waterparks are open!
- Visit on a weekday. If possible avoid traveling pretty much anywhere in the Dallas area on a weekend. Traffic is a nightmare, there are people everywhere, long lines, and just a headache in general.

Experiment with Science At The Sci-Tech Discovery Center
A fun way to start your day in The Colony, Texas is to play at the Sci-Tech Discovery Center. This fun educational museum is located in the Frisco Discovery Center. In this center are several fun museums, TrainTopia, The National Videogame Museum, an Art Museum, and of course the Sci-Tech Discovery Center.
While each of these museums has a separate entry fee, the Sci-Tech Discovery Center is free to visit if you have the Get Out Pass. This museum is such a fun place to take kids! Everywhere you look there are desks and tables set up with science experiments. We flew paper airplanes, made and raced our own cars, shot wind cannons, played a life-size operation, built domino tracks, and made mountains; to name a few of the projects we participated in.
There is so much to do in this museum, including a mini HEB for kids to shop for fake food. Education and fun all mixed into one museum at the Sci-Tech Discovery Center.

Swim at the Frisco Athletic Center Waterpark
The Colony, Little Elm, and Frisco Texas are all so close together you can’t even tell you are leaving one and entering another. So though this says Frisco, it is still practically The Colony. This athletic center is huge. Now I know what you are thinking, why would I want to go a giant gym for vacation?
2 words, water park!! Frisco Athletic Center has a really fun waterpark connected to it. The water park has a toddler section with 2 small water slides, water splashing, and water up to your mid-calf. There is a also a larger kids section with multiple bigger slides, a dumping bucket, mid-calf pool, and water splashing everywhere!
This water park is not just for kids, it is also a fun getaway for adults. There is a really large lazy river, giant speed waterslides, and of course a pool to swim in. It is the perfect family friendly getaway and also free with the Get Out Pass.

Play and Eat At Hat Creek Burger Company
Time for a lunch break in between waterparks! As parents of 4 small children, after a museum and waterpark, you can bet we wanted a break. Kids on the other hand are like energizer bunnies and need the 15 minute drive to recharge their batteries to full energy. With this unfair balance of energy, parents needing a break and kids ready to play, there is one place that accommodates both.
Hat Creek Burgers is your normal delicious burger joint. It has burgers, French fries, and of course delicious shakes. All the food is good, but the best part is, is connected to the outdoor patio eating area is a playground! So parents can enjoy their food in peace and take a break, while still get to play and not make eating out a disaster! Good food, good break, and good play!

Play At The Indoor Waterpark The Cove At Lakefront
Call me crazy for fitting 2 waterparks in in one day, but that is what we did. Can you blame me when I can get in for free with the Get Out Pass!? This second waterpark is perfect for the second half of the day when temperatures are at their hottest.
This waterpark is located indoors and while they may have windows and doors open, they also have the shade from the windows plus about 20+ ceiling fans blowing the wind down. It is like a luxury waterpark!
This water park was made for the whole family to enjoy! Seriously though! There is a giant splashing tree for babies/toddlers to play under, a large splash pad with tons of short slides for kids, giant waterslides for teenagers seeking adrenaline, surfing for dad, and of course the relaxing lazy river for mom!

Enjoy A Toilet Seat Art Museum At The Truck Yard
The day is coming to an end, but that does not mean the fun has to end quite yet. The perfect way to end the day in The Colony, Texas is to visit the Truck Yard! You will enter the yard through a path lined with old cars. The path will lead you to a large outdoor patio with stages of bands playing music, tons of food trucks of all varieties, and of course plenty of picnic tables.
I guess I should reword that, instead of picnic tables, I should say any sort of repurposed trash to create a table. We sat in an abandoned truck bed with a table in the middle, or our favorite was sitting in an old ski lift box with a table inside. It was the most unique eating area, with a giant selection of food to try.
As you wander the grounds you will find several patio games such as corn hole and giant chess. Everywhere you look is some quirky decoration that adds to the charm and unique personality of this gathering spot.
The gem of the whole place though is actually located upstairs. Upstairs of the bar is museum unlike any you have ever been to before, the Barney Smith’s Toilet Seat Art Museum. Yes you read that right! This museum is not your average art museum, this one uses the toilet seat as the canvas. Each art project is so unique and decorated with items of a theme.
There were toilet seats with Star Wars figurines, toilet seats with cell phones, some had sea shells, and some had tools. It was the most random and quirky museum I have ever been to.
