One of the things I have heard over and over again while living in West Texas, is that there is nothing to do here. So when I moved back to West Texas 2 years ago I made a decision to try and find anything and everything there is to do in this desert side of Texas! That is when I began exploring the small towns that make up the majority of West Texas. On our adventures from town to town, one tiny little town has become one of our favorites and that is Andrews, Texas.
Andrews, Texas is a tiny little town located just about 50 minutes north of Midland, Texas and 30 minutes south of Seminole, Texas. Literally out in the middle of nowhere! Even being out in the middle of no mans land, Andrews, Texas has just enough activities to make this a perfect day trip destination.
How To Spend A Perfect Day In Andrews Texas
Starting Your Day West Texas Style
You know you are in West Texas when you see a donut shop around every corner. Nothing is more appropriate for a West Texas breakfast than kolaches and donuts. Our second favorite kolache shop is actually located in this middle of nowhere Andrews, Texas; Donut Hub & Grub! This tiny little donut shop has just such amazing kolaches! The bread around the sausage has a slight sweet taste to it and it is just heavenly! So to start your day right grab a box of kolaches to go and head to the park for a picnic!

Picnic At The Park
Another West Texas tradition you have to do is visit a duck pond! I don’t know what it is about West Texas and duck ponds, but they are a thing. Almost every town has a duck pond, and Andrews, Texas is not exception. Actually Legacy Park in Andrews is our number one favorite duck pond in West Texas.
This park is so pretty and makes you feel like you aren’t even in desolate West Texas. Once you park and walk to the picnic tables that is when the stampede will waddle over to greet you! There are so many ducks and geese! My kids have such a blast feeding them and chasing them around the park.
Make sure you feast on your kolaches and take the ½ mile walk around the park. You will see turtles everywhere! This is a great spot to fish and make play! The Kids Kingdom playground located at this park is so much fun. The theme of the playground is castles and knights, so my daughter who loves being a princess is obsessed with this park!

Time For A Hike
Hiking in West Texas is a very rare thing to find, but Andrews, Texas does have its very own hiking trail! This tiny trail is actually a bird/nature trail. Located just at the southeast side of town, the hike will take you to a series of ponds and overlook to view the birds of the area. This trail is super easy and super short. The walk is along a gravel path and is straight, so if you have an off road stroller, you could even use that instead of having your kids walk.
At the beginning of the trail, there is a list of birds to keep an eye out for while walking the trail. Not gonna lie, we saw more cows than we did birds. We did see some Grackles and Doves!
At the end of the trail are a couple of small ponds and a small deck that you can walk on to for a better overlook. A couple things you should know about this area. One, West Texas is not a place that is known for smelling good and this pond is definitely a West Texas pond. It doesn’t smell that great the closer you get to the water.
Another thing; the overlook deck is old and not maintained. SO…..watch out for holes in the deck!

Lunch Time At The Dawg House
I love unique places and the Dawg House in Andrews, Texas sure is a one of a kind. This tiny little restaurant is known for the dawgs, I mean dogs! Hot dogs! These aren’t your average hot dogs either! I had a Fresca Dawg which was a hot dog wrapped in bacon, coated in zesty mayo, surrounded by bread and butter pickles, and topped off with bacon bits. One of a kind flavors that’s for sure!

Check Out The Local Museums
Andrews, Texas has 3 historic sites to visit. First is the LZ Brown Historical Oil Patch Museum. I guess I wouldn’t call it a museum, but a small field of oil equipment. This is like a graveyard for the oil field where you can walk through the evolution of oil.

The second stop is the Legacy Park museum. This small walk will show you depictions of early settlers lifestyle and let you walk around the oldest house in Andrews, Texas.

Lastly, just right next door to the Legacy park Museum is the Andrews War Memorial. Each of the stones at the entrance will teach you a little bit about each war and then when you make it to the flag you will see the names of those who have served this country so that we can have the freedoms we now have. My favorite part was the guns statues to represent soldiers who had paid the ultimate sacrifice. Such a beautiful little memorial.

So each of these museums are just that little. So to visit all 3 will maybe take you an hour max and all are FREE!
Cool Off At The Pool
By now I am sure that West Texas heat is causing you to sweat buckets! No better way to cool off than jumping in the pool for a swim. The Andrews Aquatic Center is one to the best aquatic centers in the Permian basin (for other local aquatic centers, click here). This is not just a ordinary pool! Nope this pool comes with a water slide, diving board, and climbing wall.
Best part for a mother of 4 toddlers like me, this pool has 2 toddler areas. One area is a mini pool that goes about as deep as your knees. This small pool has so small water splashing areas. The other kids area is a splash park. So the water sprays, but doesn’t build into a pool. The theme of this splash pad is pirate ship! It literally looks like a crashed pirate ship with water spraying all over it! So cute! Along with the splashing area, there are also small waterslides in the splash area.
When visiting this pool I suggest going on a weekday as it is less crowded, but regardless I suggest first thing you do is find some chairs to set up your stuff. They go pretty fast, especially the shaded ones. Another suggestion is that you and your kids wear water shoes. West Texas is hot and the walk to your shoes and to the water and back is very, very painful on your feet due to the heat emitting from the ground.

Living in Midland/Odessa area sometimes it is easy to feel like there is nothing to do any where nearby. Now it’s true, you need to drive about 2 hours to really get to the really fun places, but surprisingly enough these small West Texas towns have just enough to give a pleasant get away from town.
Andrews, Texas is not somewhere I would ever think to visit if I didn’t live so close, but for those in the area, this tiny town is a nice get away for a day.
